A good third age depends on purpose, people, happiness, health and environment.
Purpose means that you have a role of value, a part to play in society or an aim for your life. This might be work, volunteering, a hobby, family caring, or any other role that makes you feel valued and connected.
People is about your relationships with a partner, friends, groups, and communities. Everyone (with very few exceptions) needs companionship of one sort or another. Good relationships can make so much difference in life. Yet, as you get older, relationships often change or come to an end and it can sometimes be difficult to start new ones.
Happiness is a state of mind and can be found in just about every aspect of your life, especially if it is a
whole and balanced life that brings you joy. We can’t expect a life of constant happiness, but we can, and should, expect to find it regularly in our everyday life.
Health can be a more challenging area as we age. Whether your health is still good, or you are struggling, coaching may be able to help you examine any issues openly and set goals for improvement. Efforts to maintain and improve health can pay real dividends as we age. Of course, nearly everyone eventually gets to the time of life when physical or mental illness or disability affects how they manage day to day. Coaching cannot take away your illnesses or disabilities, but maybe can help you find ways to cope differently, or at least to discuss what is happening in a kind but neutral space, when sometimes talking to friends or family can be emotionally fraught.
Environment often changes as we age. Coaching can help with decisions around downsizing (or upsizing!), relocating to be near family members, a retirement move, leaving a big house in the country that no longer fits your lifestyle to be in a smaller town house, making alterations and adaptations to cope with declining health. These sorts of environmental changes can have a huge impact on your life.
I specialise in transformative coaching for third age people. The third age is the time in people’s lives when they are retired from their main career or occupation but are still living independently. In earlier times, the period between retirement and dependence (normally due to ill health) was short. Nowadays this period of life can last for a very long time. Many people retire in their mid-60s (or earlier) and can live independently well into their 80s, or even 90s. The third age can be as much as a third of people’s entire lives.
This time of life can have both exciting opportunities and immense challenges. It will always involve many life changes, some positive and some negative. Coaching can help you develop as a person, learn new skills, and successfully navigate these changes.
